National Cyber Security Awareness

Welcome

National Cyber Security Awareness Month

National Cyber Security Awareness

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month and although cyber security is a year round responsibility this month we are reminding our customers to stay vigilant.

Maintain Your Device

  • Keep your software current. Even though software updates can be annoying they usually contain security related fixes that will reduce your exposure.
  • Protect all your devices. Install security software on any devices connected to the Internet; such as your smartphone or computer.

Protect Your Accounts

  • Make passwords secure. Combine capital and lowercase letters along with numbers and symbols to make passwords secure. Refrain from using the same password at multiple sites.
  • Keep passwords safe. It is nearly impossible to remember all those different passwords. There are a variety of software solutions to pick from that will keep track of them.
  • Protection beyond passwords. Many online services will offer two factor authentication to access their systems. This usually involves a unique code sent to your cell phone as part of the login process.

Be Web Wise

  • When in doubt, delete. Links embedded in emails, tweets, posts, etc can be dangerous. The best practice is to simply delete unusual or unexpected emails or posts even if you know the source.
  • Think before you act. Scammers will create a sense of urgency or offer things too good to be true in order to convince you to divulge information. Always stop and think before taking action.
  • Public WiFi hotspots. Using public WiFi may expose your information to others. It is best to limit the type of online activity to general web browsing rather than online banking and e-commerce.
